Four issues of the New York Weekly News, Sept. 3, 10, 24 and Oct. 1, 1864. Rare title, these issues carry the big news of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a key presidential race as the Civil War rages. Gen. McClellan, "The People's Choice" is nominated. One inside page is nearly full of reports from the war front in the south, from the siege at Petersburg, Shenandoah Valley and Georgia. One most interesting report is on negroes in Alabama who raised money for maimed soldiers and appointed Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest to direct the spending. Forrest would later be instrumental in forming the KKK. Sept. 24 issue has some damage at the top of two pages. Otherwise these are rag paper, so they are in generally good shape and historical.
