War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Marion Hospital, New Orleans, La., May 7, 1864, reading, in part: "-you spoke of having a big fight down here & that is so but we cant see the victory that you ski of for we lost several pieces of artillery & all the cavalry, wagon train & lots ammuniteion & the lord knows how many men. Our men got flank on both flanks & very near surrounded. Had to run like dogs. The rebs got most of the napsacks-Brock said that we lost over a million of dollars worth of property in the fight, but the truth will never be know if Banks can help it. Every man & boy down herb is cursing Banks. Some say he aint fit for a corporal but the rebs came out pretty strong this spring. I hope & prey that Grant may be successful for-he will have it all to do yet. Money is what is the matter with some-it is likely I will stay [here] awhile. I had to laugh the other day. A man that lay beside me was going to his regiment. In a hurry took out my bed card in place of his & handed it to the clerk. The bed nurse stood by & saw it [was] my card & said 'you can put that back for I cant let him go to the regt.'-A. A. Thayer, U. S. Marion Hospital, New Orleans, La.-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Minor spotting, else VG.
