Future Confederate soldier's 3pp letter written by W. M. Campbell who joined the 10th South Carolina Infantry. Campbell is writing his sister in St. Albans Vermont. The letter is accompanied by a perfect cover, circular post mark, "CHARLESTON S.C. DEC 22, 1860". The letter is Datelined Charleston, Dec. 22/60. In part, "We have been out of the Union now two days, but do not notice as yet any danger in affairs. Letters come and go, vessels arrive and leave, people buy and sell, eat and drink ... Still the state has taken a leap in the dark & what will be the affect of it politically, commercially, and socially, God only knows. For myself, this is my home, my children are natives, everything I have in the world is here & for good or ill my lot for the future is cast here. I was a co-operational in '52 (SC first secession effort) . I am now a Secessionist & what little I can do, I will do willingly, even to shouldering a musket ... I need not tell you, my letter is for yourself, not for publication. ..." This was previously sold by Siegel, 2014, for $1100.
