Confederate Soldier's letter written and signed by J(ames) A(lexander) Maddox who enlisted on 6/27/1861 as a Private into "E" Co. GA 20th Infantry. Wounded 9/17/1862 Sharpsburg, MD, Wounded 9/19/1863 Chickamauga, GA. Wounded 5/6/1864 Wilderness, VA. and Surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.Dateline April 28,'62, Camp 20th Ga Regt, Near Yorktown Va. In part, "... I labor under .. a bout by severe headache and cold which renders me very unpleasant ... I am alone as the coming has gone on pickett. ... We are expecting the second Yorktown battle to come off every day and when it does it will be the bloodiest ever fought on this continent. It is said that the Yankees have two hundred thousand while we have about one hundred and twenty five thousand, well entrenched.. ... a grateful people who will be ever ready to avenge their death and never give up the struggle until the sunshine of peace and independence has gladden the heart of every citizen of the Confederate states. ..."
