Union soldier 4pp. letter (tanned) written by George Brimmer Lombard who enlisted in the 4th regiment, Mass. militia, responding to the call for three months' troops and reported at Fortress Monroe Va., where it was mustered into the U.S. service, April 22, 1861. It was employed in fortifying a camp at Newport News for the most part but took part in an expedition against Big Bethel, where it was in an encounter with the enemy. On July 22, 1861, the 4th was mustered out but in Aug., 1862, it again volunteered for duty and was mustered in for nine months Lombard Union soldier's letter written by re-enlisted on 5/26/1862 as a Sergt Major into Field & Staff MA 4th Battn Infantry. Dateline US. Frigate Anacosta, Hampton Roads, Aug. 14 (1861). In part, "you have probably heard by this time the full particulars of the withdrawal of our Troops from Hampton and the burning of it by a party of Georgians on the night of the 8th instant - every house in the village was burned excepting two or three on the outskirts. They didnt even spare the Church, the oldest but one I think of any in the US. It was taken twice by the British and was used by them as a hospital and slaughter house. We have been up to Newport News ... and one night in coming back we got aground opposite Sewalls Point and layed there the greater of the night and expected an attack from the Secessionists but they didn't try. Up to NN I got a piece of the tree under which Lord Cornwallis ate his last meal before he surrendered ... There has been several Balloon ascensions here but they have not discovered anything ... there were seventy-five more prisoners sent there from Newport News ..."
