Union Soldier's 4pp letter written by Hiram Parker who mustered into "D" Co. PA 18th Cavalry on 10/22/1862. Dateline; US Gunboat Kanawha, Off Mobile, February 15, 1863, with original cover cancelled New Orleans to his father, Dr. Hiram Parker. In part, "This morning we discovered a large steamer standing toward us and by her rig we took her for an Englishman. We got under weigh and stood towards her accompanied by the Susquehanna and one gunboat. .. we ran across her bow ... She proved to be Britannic Majesty's War Steamer Styx and wished to communicate with the English consul at Mobile. The Commodore granted the request ...I have no doubt they wanted to give the rebels some information ... It has always happened that very soon after a visit from an English war vessel, some blockade runner would make his appearance ..."
