Union soldier's 4pp. letter, signed by Calvin. Dateline, Camp 42 regt OVI, Duvalls Bluff Ark, Nov. 4, 1864. Writing his lover, in part, "I would smother you with kisses or some other way ... then you will wish you never had need to bother me ... dont you begin to tremble for fear of my arrival ... If it were not for you, I should undoubtedly remain in the service another three years ... A soldier's life is a life of hardship ... I came in this morning from 24 hours picket duty ... cold rain, frozen slightly ... we could have had fried ice for breakfast ... laid down of the wet ground to try to sleep ... people who have never been south have no idea what war is. ... they are very strict about admitting citizens male of female within the lines ... I found a woman at the hicker pass, had stayed there all night in the rain, she had a son within the lines sick. She had come to bring him things ... as an act of humanity, I sent her to the General for a permit for her to go into the lines. She thanked me with tears in her eyes ..."
