Civilian letter written by Frank Smith regarding his friend, Captain Henry Meyer. Dateline; 78 Brown Street, June 24 to Dr. Jno McCalla (with original cover addressed to Seminary Hospital, Georgetown HQ. In part, "I am writing to you to take care for the wounded friend of mine ... Henry Meyer Capt, 24th New York Cavalry wounded in the back and now in your hospital. He is a nephew of my Cheif Wm. B. Coddingto. I do not know young Meyer very well having only seen him a half dozen times. ... He is a brave young officer and I think a gentleman. ... my chief is terribly distressed about his wound and anxious to learn his condition. ... drop me a line telling me his true condition ..." Henry Coddington Meyer who on 2/21/1864 was commissioned into "D" Co. NY 24th Cavalry. He was listed as wounded 6/16/1864 Petersburg, VA. awarded the Medal of Honor for action on 6/17/1864 at Petersburg, VA. (During assault, rendered heroic assistance to wounded and helpless officer). Meyer was discharged for disability on 10/13/1864.
