By Alonzo A. Vanderford Who Enlisted at Cheraw, South Carolina in Company D, 21st South Carolina Infantry as a Sergeant, in May 1862 was promoted from 2nd Sergeant, July 1863 was wounded and didn't return to duty until the end of the year, on June 24, 1864 he was wounded during the Siege of Petersburg and had his leg amputated in the Hospital at Petersburg, Virginia. On July 28, 1864 died of his wound. The Data Base incorrectly reports that Vanderford died February 1863. Confederate soldier's 2pp. letter to his wife, Dateline Fort Sumter, March 13, 1864. In part, "I am n ow at Fort Sumter ..The old fort is badly torn up but I don't think it will come up to Wagner yet. ... Captain Tarth and myself are all that are here from the company. We have fifty men with us all in good spirits. .. The Yanks have thrown three shells into the city up to this time, now 4pm. ... ... This is a torn up place, I tell you, but I have seen worse. .. Some say we will have to stay here 12 days, some say 20 days, others say 24 days ..."
