CLEM, John Lincoln (1851-1937) ran away from home and joined the 22nd Michigan Infantry as a drummer boy. He not only wielded a rifle at the Battle of Chickamauga, he was said to have shot a Confederate colonel who demanded his surrender. He was then promoted to sergeant at the age of 12, the youngest non-commissioned officer in American history. Autograph Endorsement "Jno. L. Clem" on 8-1/2" x 11" manuscript Special Order No. 29, issued at Headquarters Fort Brown, Texas, March 14th 1874. The order details that "2nd Lieut. J.L. Clem 24th infantry will proceed to Brangor Santiago and relieve 2nd Lieut. Henry Nuggent in charge of the detachment ..." Comes with a 8" x 10" modern copy photo.
