Signed CDV on the reverse, "G.F. Nichols, Lieut Col 118th" with Plattsburgh backmark. Nichols enlisted on 8/21/1862 at New York City, NY as a Major, was commissioned into Field & Staff NY 118th Infantry. He was wounded 5/16/1864 Drewry's Bluff, VA, and again wounded 9/28/1864 Fort Harrison, VA.
