A confederate soldier's 2pp. letter written by George B. Dewese who mustered into "K" Co. NC 56th Infantry, 7/28/1862. He was hospitalized 3/30/1863 Goldsboro, NC. And, was Killed on 8/21/1864 at Globe Tavern, VA. Datelined Camp Badger NC., Sept. 28/62, in part, "We came very near to having an engagement with the Yankees ... Three blockading vessels they said came in 300 yards of the shore and threw bomb shells at our camp. we were out drilling when they were firing ... the shells were flying all around us ... The Yankees had better be careful for if they get into and engagement with the gallant 56th they won't know where they are for this is the most noble regiment on the Confederate Service ..."
