Alabama Confederate soldier letter, 4pp. light ink, written by John W. Baker who enlisted on 8/1/1863 as a Private into "C" Co. AL 61st Infantry. Dateline, Picket Camp Near the Rapidan, March 20,1864. In small part, "My dear family, you do not know how glad I was to hear that you was living in peace for I wished for one thing, it is that you may all agree and keep peace among you and with with your neighbors and that you may all live the Christian's life that the God in whom I trust may bring us all home to Heaven ... I have one request to make of you, Mary and George, that you take your testament the night after you get this letter and just as you lay down, you read at least one chapter. The next night I want Mary to do to do the same and the next night I want George to read and then you again .... And so each of you in turn every night until I return home. ... I put my trust in the Lord ... that He will take care of you ... that we may finally meet in heaven where we are never to be parted ..."
