Union soldier 4pp. pencil letter, written by John W. Dowdell, who was in Company A, 8th New York State Militia and later was mustered into "A" Co. NY 8th Infantry and was mustered out on 9/10/1862 at New York, NY. Datelined Washington, May 20/61. In part, "We have at last arrived in Washington. On Ssturday we left Relay house about noon and finally reached Washington at 5:00. ... It has been raining all day and night. The water coming through the tents, you might as well be in the open air ... Many leaving home with no or little money ... I appeal to you to advance me ten dollars ... We will be sworn in some time - which will be no longer than three months ..."
