Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. S. Thompson, Co. H, 24th Massachusetts Vols., "Camp Lee, Newbern, N. C. Aug. 26, 1862," in part: "- our regiment has been off on an expedition to a place called Newbern. The regiment has been to Beaufort, Moorehead City & Swansboro. We went down to Swansboro to destroy some salt works. The[y] had there -to places where they made salt. They could make about 80 bushels of salt a day. We destroyed everything that was there. Beaufort is a very healthy place. They send all the sick soldiers there when they don't get well very quick - brother, S. Thompson - Co. H., 24th Regt., Newbern, N. C., Burnside Expedition."
