William Hinkson he mustered into "D" Co. VT 5th Infantry 9/16/1861, and was discharged for disability on 10/16/1862. The credits continue "In memory of a wounded comrade in the Battle of Savage Station, Sunday evening June 29, 1862". The poem in part, stanza two, "Oh for the loved one who so anxiously thought, Of the soldier boy far in the ranks of the brave, As she hears of the battle that was so fiercely fought, In the far distant land of the Slave ..." The second page also has an eight stanza poem which is credited to George Oscar French who mustered into "C" Co. VT 1st Heavy Artillery, 9/1/1862 and was wounded 10/19/1864 Cedar Creek, VA and finally killed on 4/2/1865 at Petersburg, VA. The poem in part, stanza three, "As I stood on the hill communing alone, I took a last look on my Green Mountain home, From the depths of my soul I earnestly prayed, And turned from the spot where I oft had strayed. ..."
