IL 127th Infantry on 9/5/1862. He was wounded 1/11/1863 Arkansas Post, AR., and died of wounds five days later, 1/16/1863. Datelined, Friday evening Jan. 2nd, 1863. In part, "Last Sunday we fought all day, crawling among logs brush sometimes lying flay upon the ground. When shells came among us, the Rebels were across a little creek or bayou too deep to ford ... Further back were high hills at the base of which they had their cannon. ... We were in a swamp 15 feet below the Yazoo river 3 miles from Vicksburg. We were marched to the front of the regiment numbered a little over 400 men .. to within 15 rodsof where there was a sharp fighting .. ordered to lay flat and be ready when called. The 57th Ohio was a little in front of us ... The Rebels fired a volley over the 57th ..they broke and ran square over ... Our company didn't lose a man. In Sunday's battle our whole loss was 900 killed and wounded. It is an awful sight to see men cut up. I saw a Captain in the 83rd Indiana with his head shot off ... Col. Wyman of the 13th Ill was killed ... Last Monday night was the hardest night I ever saw. We lay all day in little ravine the balls flying just over our heads. ... Rained all night making a perfect mud hole
