Very rare original photograph of the aftermath of a lynching, 6.5 x 4.25 b/w, depicting two deceased men, both the victims of a mob lynching. Both men have their hands bound - one is still suspended from a train trestle, the other lies sprawled upon the ground, his rope having snapped. A period printed label applied to the verso explains: 'Scene of the lynching of Fred Ingraham and Jas. Green, murderers of C. M. Millett, by the bold '33' on Tuesday night, April 3rd, 1883 at Hastings, Neb. Photographed by George O. Churchill, Hastings, Neb.' The photo also bears Churchill's back mark. The image is somewhat faded but entirely legible. Margins a bit rough, verso soiled, else very good. Fred Ingraham and James Green were lynched after being jailed for the robbery and murder of storekeeper Cassin Millet. A third accomplice was spared his life because of his youth and willingness to confess his part in the crime. A vigilante group naming themselves the 'Invincible 33' overpowered the guards in Hastings and completed their grisly task of lynching the two men on April 3, 1883.
