Signed Book, “G.L. Force, from Uncle Manning”, on front flyleaf of book titled “Popular Tales”, Boston, 1854, 404pp., VG. Manning Ferguson Force (December 17, 1824 – May 8, 1899) was a lawyer, judge and soldier from Ohio. He became known as the commander of the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and was a recipient of the Army Medal of Honor for gallantry in action. His citation, “Charged upon the enemy's works, and after their capture defended his position against assaults of the enemy until he was severely wounded.
