RUGGLES, TImothy (1711-1795) He was a delegate to the first colonial (or Stamp Act) congress of 1765, which met in New York on October 7, and was elected its president, but refused to sanction the addresses sent by that body to Great Britain, for which he was publicly censured by the general court of Massachusetts. OTIS, James (1725-1783) American Revolutionary statesman who fought in the courts to uphold the rights of the colonists, and later fought British revenue laws in the Massachusetts legislature with Samuel Adams. Autograph Endorsement SIgned, “Timo Ruggles” with four lines in his hand, on verso of 3p. folio document, 1745, being a Sherrif’s order to take command of Edward Little of Bristol, Massachusetts, to answer to the court in a civil law case. Additonaly signed on verso by James Otis as Attorney. Fine.
