WHITLAW REID (1837-1912) U.S. politician and newspaper editor. Longtime editor of the New York Tribune and close friend of Horace Greeley. In 1892, Vice presidential nominee on a ticket headed by incumbent president Benjamin Harrison. Typed Letter Signed on New York Tribune letterhead, 1pp., Dec 31, 1888 writing to crusading journalist Edward H. House (1836-1901): "…concerning Mr. Mutsu, The Minister from Japan, was duly received, and the next day was presented his letter at the house. Unfortunately, I was out, and when the next day I returned his call, he too was out. I was his secretary, however…" (continues) Signed "J Whitlaw Reid."Formerly a reporter for the Tribune, House was a respected journalist in the United States, though later he became a paid apologist for the Japanese State in many of his writings. Fine.
