WINTHROP, Joseph (1757-1828) came to Charleston in 1783. He at once entered the mercantile business and became one of the prominent merchants of the city. For more than a generation he was actively engaged in the development of the commercial, educational, and religious life of his adopted city. Autograph Letter Signed boldly "Joseph Winthrop", 2pp., dateline Charleston S.Ca. April 22, 1806, to Moser Carlton. The thrust of the letter concerns the ship Captain Clark and its contents which were not as yet paid for.
