SIMPSON, William Dunlap (1823-1890) was the 78th Governor of South Carolina from February 26, 1879, when the previous governor, Wade Hampton, resigned to take his seat in the U.S. Senate, until 1880. That year Simpson resigned to become Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court.War-date Confederate partly-printed Document Signed "W.D. Simpson" as Provost Marshal, 1pp. oblong octavo, July 1, 1861, Army of the Potomac, 1st Brigade, Advance Forces, permitting Robert R. Hemphill of the Orr's Rifles to pass "without molestation from the Forces of this Department in & around the village & the vicinity within our lines.." Near fine condition.
