"Impromptu, On hearing Jenny Lind Sign the Swedish Echo Song" .. Throughout the crowded hall deep silence reigned, And strong men's hearts beat high with hope and fear; While woman's cheek grew pale, lest in that hour The songstress, like a frightened bird, should feel The power of song grow faint, or even fail. They looked upon her fair and gentle face, ......I've heard the nightingale pour out her song In the lone woods in summer's quiet night, And hushed my breath to listen,-thus it was When first I heard that Swedish melody.
