Vaughn Richard Shoemaker (1902-1991), Carol Stream, Illinois, was an American editorial cartoonist. He won the 1938 and 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and created the character John Q. Public. Political Cartoon, 13-1/4" x 16-1/4", signed by the artist, "Shoemaker" and published by the Chicago American 1965. Titled "Worst Wash in the Neighborhood" shows President Nixon, sleeves rolled up and taking "Nixon Action" to combat "Wash. DC. Crime". In 1969 during Nixon's campaign, he had promised to crack down on crime, starting in Washington DC, which was federally controlled. Congress cleared the Nixon initiative, the DC Crime Bill which was controversial.
