Broadside, 9-1/2" x 12-1/2", titled, "Salt River Express", October 14, 1868 with eight vignetted cartoons to include "McMichael and Tyndale bound for Salt River" as the current Republican mayor swims with his protege, the current candidate. "The Stampede from the Mayor's Office" shows a white sheriff chasing three Blacks. And, "The three Brethren that failed to catch the FOX" shows three blacks after a fox. In 1870, federal troops needed to be called in to protect black voting rights under the newly ratified Fifteenth Amendment when it became clear the Democratic Philadelphia mayor Daniel M. Fox (in office 1869-72) was likely to use his police to block African Americans' access to the polls. The broadside shows some discoloration.
