Political Broadside, 17" x 22," titled "SHALL THE MENACE LIVE?". The broadside is a solicitation for funds to keep the newspaper, The Menace, solvent. Three illustrations of period politicians are referred to in the presentation. Judge Gilbert O. Nation ran for President on the American Party, Billy Parker was editor of the Menace and assassinated in 1929.Gilbert Owen Nations (1866-1950) was an American lawyer and judge from Washington, D.C. who campaigned against Roman Catholicism in the United States. In 1924, he was the presidential nominee of an organization called the American Party.The Menace was founded in 1911 by Wilbur Franklin Phelps within the first three years there were a million subscribers. It was an anti-Catholic publication. Along with the paper, the company also published anti-Catholic books and arranged engagements for anti-Catholic speakers.
