Masonic Shield, 14” wide at the top edge, 14” long to the bottom edge. Black velvet front, black linen back. Top flap has two silver crossed swords, each 4” long. There are four small rings on verso attaching the crossed swords. Hundreds of metal tassels are attached to the silver ribbon border of the flap and the entire shield. Mounted in the center of the shield is a tarnished silver open equilateral triangle, one-half inch wide, with twelve stars cut into it. Each side is 6.25” long. Silver skull and crossbones are affixed to the 4” black velvet center; eight small rings on verso attached the triangle, skull, and crossbones to the velvet. There are two metal hooks affixed to the top edge. Significant weight in silver. At top verso is sewn a black fabric tag marked “Ames Sword Co. / Military and / Society Goods / Chicopee, Mass.” The Ames Sword Co., Chicopee, Mass., mark replaced the Ames Mfg. Co. mark in 1881. A 2” x half-inch silver rimmed frame is affixed beneath the tag. Imprinted within the frame is “H.B. Gompert.” Very Fine condition. This Masonic Shield is said to be from St. Patrick Freemason Lodge, Johnstown, New York. St. Patrick’s Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons was constituted by warrant, dated May 23, 1766, granted by the Provincial Grand Master of New York, to Sir William Johnson, Baronet, Master, Guy Johnson, S. W., and Daniel Claus, J. W., of Johnstown, New York. The lodge was organized at Johnson Hall on August 23, 1766.
