In his authority as bishop of Louisiana he recommends a meeting of delegates to decide a path forward between the Northern and Southern factions of the church following the creation of the Confederate States of America. His letter/circular, reads, in part: "Dear Brethren-The rapid march of events and the change which has taken place in our civil relations, seem to usàto require an early consultation among the Diocese of the Confederate States for considering their relations to the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United Statesàthis necessity does not arise out of any dissension which has occurred within the church itselfàwe propose to youàthe appointment of three clerical and three lay deputiesàto meet an equal number of delegates fromàthe Diocese within the Confederate States, at MontgomeryàAlabama, on the third day of July next to consult upon such matters as may have arisenàin our civil affairs. Weàaddress youà[as] the senior Bishops of the Diocese within the Confederate StatesàLEONIDAS POLK, Bishop of Louisiana. STEPHEN ELLIOTT, Bishop of Georgia." Much more interesting content.
