A hinged walnut case, 16 ¼" x 3" x 5", with a period G. Tiemann & Co. interior label is custom fitted for the twelve fine surgical instruments it contains. Resting against a protective red velvet lining are knives, scalpels and the nasty-looking bone saw all Civil War medical collectors are wild about. Tiemann's firm, founded in 1826, is still making surgical instruments today. Lacking one scalpel and the inlaid nameplate (of owner or maker?) formerly on the lid. Excellent condition overall
