A complete and authentic issue of the Niles’ Weekly Register, December 25, 1824, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, several exchanges regarding South Carolina’s law “Act for the better regulation and government of free negroes and persons of color ...” These efforts became known as Black Codes. In part the regulation states “any vessel shall come into any port ... having onboard any free negroes, or persons of color as cooks, stewards, mariners, or any other employment on board the vessel, such free ... shall be liable to be seized and confined in the goal until such vessel shall clear out ...” there are several examples cited where this law was applied to English ships.
