Union soldier’s 4pp letter written on New York patriotic, to his mother, by Stephen W. Lowe who on 6/11/1861, mustered into "K" Co. New York 35th Infantry. He died of disease (date not stated) at Washington, DC. Datelined: Falls Church, Va., Nov. 29, 1861, in part “Yesterday was Thanksgiving .. the officers had a great dinner and the privates could go anywhere with a pass signed by their Captains. .. I was on guard ... saw the effects of passes for there were some put in the guard house for intoxication. ... When I look at Mr. Wuhler, who is in our tent, and used to be tough and healthy .. but he took a cold .. it has settled in his lungs and he is wasting away with consumption. The Surgeon has given him his discharge ... It is my prayer that this war may soon be brought to a close ...”
