Pvt. Daniel William Lugenbeal, Co. F, 135th Ohio Infantry, survived the SULTANA disaster by killing the Sultana's mascot alligator and floating down to Memphis in the sturdy wooden crate that the pet had been in. Lugenbeal was forever after known as the man that was "Saved by a Alligator." The group includes: A 6-1/2" carved letter opener with a alligator carved on the handle, "Wm. LUGENBEAL" inked on the blade and "GAR POST 331`" inked on the other side of the blade. ... plus A small , 4" x 2-3/4" paper 45 star flag, imprinted "UNION EX-PRISONERS OF WAR". ... plus, His Civil War veterans Medal". ... plus, A 3 name plate "SULTANA"
