Original Political Cartoon Artboard signed by the Political Cartoonist. Another Cesare Political cartoon art, titled "A Voice From The Jungle" and below the art "We sincerely Regret - What?". The cartoon shows Teddy rising from the jungle while the Panama Canal divides TR from Jennings Bryan who is on dry ground. Lil Columbia looks on. The apology was issued by the Wilson administration, supported by Bryan and part of a treaty which paid Colombia $25 million. President Theodore Roosevelt oversaw the realization of a long-term United States goal-a transisthmian canal. ... Following heated debate over the location of the proposed canal, on June 19, 1902, the U.S. Senate voted in favor of building the canal through Panama. But Colombia resisted. When Colombia grew reticent in its negotiations, Roosevelt and Panamanian business interests collaborated on a revolution. The battle for Panama lasted only a few hours. Colombian soldiers in Col=n were bribed $50 each to lay down their arms; the U.S.S. Nashville cruised off the Panamanian coast in a show of support. On November 3, 1903, the nation of Panama was born.
