E. & H. T. Anthony CDV, captioned “Washington as Commander in Chief” shows Charles Peale Polk’s portrait, “Washington at Princeton.” The incredible story is printed on the verso mount, "The original of this picture is in possession of General Lee, at Richmond. It was captured by our forces and returned to its owner by the Government. This copy was made while it was in Washington. It is the only picture extant of Washington in his uniform as Commander-in-Chief.” ... plus, Harper’s Weekly, August 8, 1863, 16pp, disbound, VG. This exact CDV is advertised for sale by Anthony on the last page of this issue under the headline “WASHINGTON AS COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF.” In 1863 you would have paid 25 cents. Very unusual to have these two items together again.
