Business card, 3" x 2" imprinted, "James M. DeWolf". In the bottom left corner, "Physician & Surgeon" and in the right corner, "Harvard University". Printed in period ink under DeWolf's name, "Westminster, Cr. 16th St. Ma." On the reverse of the calling card in period ink, "Killed by the Sioux." Condition is fine.After graduating from Harvard University School of Medicine on June 26th, 1875, his first assignment, contracted with the U.S. Army was WITH THE 7TH U.S. CAVALRY and stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory. In the Spring of 1876, he was assigned to Major Marcus Reno's battalion. At the battle of the Little Big Horn, Dr. DeWolf was killed on June 25th. He was shot from his horse, but survived. He was then scalped and 6 arrows were shot into his head and face. He was initially buried on the battlefield near where he fell, then moved to the National Cemetery.
