Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of The Gentleman’s Magazine, London, October 1791, 96pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, two wood cut engravings on the same page, “E. View of Bambrough Castle, “ and “Great Tower of the Castle.” On the facing page a detailed description of the Castle. The Vikings destroyed the original fortification in 993. The Normans built this castle. William II unsuccessfully besieged it in 1095 during a revolt supported by its owner, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria. After Robert was captured, his wife continued the defence until coerced to surrender by the king's threat to blind her husband.
