Shirley served as the colonial Governor of Massachusetts from 1741-56 and, for a short period of time, commanded all British forces in North America, capturing the French stronghold of Louisbourg in 1745, during the French and Indian Wars. Province of Mass Bay. Document Signed, 1 page. 14 ½” x 11”. Boston, August 27, 1754. An appointment of Lamerton Cooper “to be Lieutenant of the Foot Company in the Town of Springfield under the command of Captain Samuel Mirick in the South Regiment of Militia…Signed at the conclusion by Shirley as governor. Mounted long ago to a linen backing. Some light paper loss at folds.
