Booklet, “Border Methodism and Border Slavery” by Rev. Mayland M’Carter, Philadelphia, 1858, 88pp., lacking back cover. Border Methodism was a significant religious movement that emerged in the American South, particularly in the Upper South and the border states (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri). It was a branch of Methodism that sought to reconcile the tenets of Christian faith with the institution of slavery. Border Methodists often sought to justify slavery within a Christian framework, arguing that it could be a benevolent institution if practiced responsibly. Many Border Methodists believed that moral persuasion and Christian education could gradually lead to the abolition of slavery.
