A self-cover 4pp. letter written by HH Howland to Alva Scott, Worcester Mass, January 13th 1852, a 2" clipping taken from the letter. In part, "Dear Alva, you say you had talked some about going to California - it is astonishing to me to hear you talk so - how can you for one moment think of going so far away from your dear companion ... for the sake of trying to accumulate a fortune by digging gold - think of the risk you run of becoming sick without any kind companion .,.. I am acquainted with several young men that have been there and returned with miserable health, without much gold ... a numbered started in hopes of becoming suddenly rich who found a watery grave - others that were murdered ...Again I ask how can you think of leaving your dear ones ... for the sake of a little gold ..." The writer continues , "I believe with good health, industry, perseverance and economy, a good living can be secured in any place ...."
