A nice war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. Ira F. Gensel, 4th United States Regular Infantry, [MWIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62 died 12/28/62], "On Board Knickerbocker, Chesapeake Bay, Mar. 29, 1862", in part: "…at seven we passed Mount Vernon…at Eight passed Fort Washington and then in rapid succession all the Rebel Batteries on the Potomac which have all been recently evacuated…at sunset we reached the mouth of the river where we cast anchor…this morning…we started on our voyage down the Chesapeake Bay…3 o'clock P. M. we are nearing Fortress Monroe. The fortifications are in sight…a gun from the fort has just announced our approach. The Monitor…now rules the waters here, is but a short distance from us and the most singular looking affair I ever looked at. Truly it looks like a Yankee Cheese Box…have my horse on board and a fine one it is too…Ira F. Gensel." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
