(Clifford Berryman) Unsigned Political Cartoon, 6-3/4” c 6-1/2”, “Anti-Trust Statutes.” Frederick William Lehmann (1853-1931), who was named solicitor general by Present Howard Taft in 1910, served two years declaring the government in error when he thought it so and often delighted the Supreme Court with his wit. He handled cases which established the government’s right to tax corporate incomes. Lehmann is shown sitting and smoking a long clay pipe and holds in his hand a paper which reads “Anti-Trust Statutes.” By 1911 it had become necessary for the courts to distinguish between combinations that were great and those that were harmful to trade, the “rule of reason.” Penciled notations and printers marks, inscribed “Lehmann” at base. Light soiling, else very good.
