War-date Confederate non-commissioned officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Quartermaster Sergeant Mann Page [WIA Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9, 62], 21st Virginia Infantry, Huntersville, [Western Virginia], Sept. 5, 1861, to his uncle, David Copeland Randolph, reading, in part: "…I am thankful to say that I am one of the few of my Regt. that has not been knocked up by the hardships although I am almost worn out from the multipisity (sic) of my duties . Col. [William] Gilham appointed me qrt. master. Powell has never joined the Regt…he entered the department with some reluctance for it never has been properly organized…I left Camp Valley Mountain day before yesterday…possibly you may hear of a battle before this…we should have had one before this but for the continual rain…I have never seen so much and the roads up here are worse beyond description…we cannot get enough provisions over them to supply the army…our camp is in a country that cannot subsist our horses…the quartermaster & commissary department are of great importance but are filled up here with incompetent men and any who wants to attend to his business…will have every body's business besides his own…I sometimes wonder how I stand so much exposure…I must leave here for a two days ride for camp, over the worse roads…in charge of five wagons…I wish very much that I had my saddle & old bridle up here…if you could get it to me I would be very thankful…please send me a pair of strong pants and a thick warm shirt…Mann Page, quartermaster Sargt., Col. Gilham 21st Regt. Va. Vol. Army of North West, Camp Valley Mount." Mann Page (1834-1904) was Grand Master of Virginia Masons, 1894. He now rests in peace at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. Near fine.
