A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Waggon Camp,1st Army Corps near Pony Mountain, Va., Sept. 26, 1863", in part: "…sine we left the Rappahannock…we received orders to march at 2…on the morning of the 16th…crossed the river on the rod to Culpeper but turned off when bout half way there and brought up nearly to the foot of Pony Mountain…we had got everything ready to move. The Genl. ordered that only one team should go with him and that should carry only the officers bedding and just a few things that they would really need…it does not seem like an advance for the Corps is just doing picket down to Raccoon Ford on the Rapidan and beside…Rosecrans has got licked like the devil and in consequence the Army of the Potomac is sending down the 11th & 12th Corps to reinforce him…the rest of the army is going to fall back to Centreville or somewhere in that vicinity…of the Conscripts…the very sight of them has discouraged the old men (what few there are left)…the old men will never fight as they have before and I am damned sure that the conscripts wont do much if they can get out of it but they are sabering them off some for they have a target shooting most every day. There was one fellow shot in our Corps yesterday and there is two more to shoot. The one they shot belonged to the 4th Maryland and the other two…belongs to my Regt and…the 90th P. V. They are all conscripts. Col. Leonard said…that he did not care if they shot all of them…Chas. W. Manning…". Minor toning, else VG
