MITCHEL, Ormsby MacKnight (or McKnight) (1810-1862) was an American astronomer and major general in the American Civil War. In September 1862, he assumed command of X Corps and the Department of the South at Hilton Head, South Carolina, but died in Beaufort of yellow fever shortly after assuming his post. Endorsement Signed "O.M. Mitchel, Maj. Gen. Comd" on the reverse of an officer's letter regarding over extended Leave of Absences. Federal officer's letter written by Colonel William S. Diller, 4pp., dateline Head Quarters, 76th Reg. P. V., Hilton Head, SC., October 2, 1862. The colonel provides the circumstances of four officers whom have over stayed their leave of absences. In small part, " ... Surgeon E.R. Scholl ... leave expired July 26, 1862 ... Gen'l Brannan ordered him arrested ..." Then, "Capt. J.J. Baird ... leave expired July 29, 1862 ... reported Sept 15th ..." Then "1st Lieut. Jas. Book ... leave expired July 12, 1862 ... reported to his regiment Sept. 25, 1862 ..." And finally, ""1st Lieut. Wm P. Barndollar .. leave expired August 15th, 1862 ... reported to his regiment Sept. 25, 1862 ...".
