The second USS Atlanta was a protected cruiser and one of the first steel warships of the "New Navy" of the 1880s. In some references she is combined with Boston as the Atlanta class, in others as the Boston class. Commissioned July 1886. In 1897-99 Atlanta received a new triple-expansion engine of 4,030 hp (3,010 kW) and the 6-inch guns were converted to rapid firing with brass case ammunition replacing powder bags. Decommissioned March 1912.Spanish American War period sailor's cap, wool with gold embroidery, missing some lettering, but reads "U.S.S. Atlanta" Very good condition.
