c. 1865 Civil War Period, U.S. Military Civil War Model 1863 (Type 1) "SPRINGFIELD" Rifle Converted to Trapdoor, Fine. This U.S. Military Civil War Model 1863 (Type 1) SPRINGFIELD Rifle was Converted to Trapdoor. It has the rifle lock dated "1863" and marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the Federal Eagle. The Allin style trapdoor conversion mechanism is a bit sloppy and could use some work. This appears to be a transition between the Allin conversion of 1865 and the Allin conversion of 1866. This rifle has a 40" .58 caliber rifled barrel with remnants of the date "1864". The stock is solid with expected scratches and dings from years of actual service. All steel parts have typical salt and pepper light pitting with a natural deep patina. Lacking a ram rod. The lock is in good mechanical working order. A scarce Civil War type.
