Gates Phillips Thruston (1835-1912) was an American lawyer and businessman. Born in Ohio, he served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and started a legal practice in Nashville, Tennessee in the reconstruction era. On 8/17/1861, he was commissioned into "C" Co. Ohio 1st Infantry. He was then commissioned into "C" Co. Ohio 1st Infantry, On 9/4/1863. Reached Brig-General 3/13/1865 by Brevet. Group of three post war letters, each signed “G.P. gates” and written from Nashville Tennessee. The first, Nov. 6, 1866, 4pp. to Jeremiah Colburn, in part “I have laid for you a number of military letters I have secured-good letters of FGelix Grundy & Gen. Pillow ... This is the home of Jackson, Johnson, Polk, Bell, Brown Cheatham and other CSA celebrities .. I think I will be able to find many treeasures ... “ ... plus, Nashville, July 26, 1867 to Jeremiah Colburn,, 4pp. in part, “I have not been able to send you any respectable equivalent for your autographs you sent me last summer. ... there hundreds of letters of Jackson, Polk Grundy.... In the mean time I send you the letters of Bushrod Washington, Phil Sheridan and General Thomas ...’ ... plus, Nashville ND., to Jeremiah Colburn, 2pp. in part, “I am too much overrun with my profession to have much time for numismatics , but I have much fondness for the study and have perhaps the finest collection in the state - 2500-3500 coins ...”
