A great early war-date Union brevet brigadier general's letter, 2pp., 8vo., written by then 2nd Lieut. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), 4th New Jersey Militia, on rare (the first we have encountered in the marketplace) illustrated "ARMORY WASHINGTON LIGHT INFANTRY", "Camp Meridian, Washington City, May 14, 1861," in part: "…we have been on regimental parade all this afternoon. It is very hard work I assure you to be marching all over…buttoned up to the throat for…the sun pours down like fury. 2 of our men asked leave of absence to go to the city, but instead…the[y] went…along the river and crossed the bridge over to Virginia where they had a very narrow escape of being taken by the advanced picket's guard of the Virginia rebels…John Willian Jr." VG
