HENRY, Patrick (1736-1799) American patriot and lawyer from Virginia. Henry was a member of the first Continental Congress. He acted as governor of Virginia during the war. He was dissatisfied with the federal constitution and opposed its ratification in 1788. He is best known for his "Give me liberty, or give me death." War-date Autograph Document Signed, "P. Henry" 1p. 7-1/4"x3-1/2", May 2, 1780, and reads "recd from Peter Hairston yesterday & today in the whole L969.12.4 being my proportion of the cash he recd. for Horses in Carolina & Balla. of the money I put into his Hands for Expenses & c..."
